I wish I was cool

Sigh. Just got back from the Apple Store, checking out the new MacBook Pros. Want one so bad. It’s really hard to justify the expense at this point, you know… being a full-time .NET developer and all.

In desperation, I set all my Visual Studio 2005 settings so that it looks just like the Vibrant Ink TextMate theme. It’s the next best thing… I suppose.

Here is my exported settings file, in case you are feeling the Visual Studio blues as well.

I'm right there with you. I've had my eye on the MacBook since it was announced. If only it ran VS.NET 2005, supported Indigo, and WinForms I'd be in business. I'm giving your VibrantInk settings to see if it helps the Mac desire subdue a bit....

Hey guys. Being a ASP.NET developer in my day job, I'm right there with you. I seem to be spending all my days getting more disappointed with .NET 2.0 and Microsoft in general, all the while growing in love and admiration for Ruby, Rails, and the the community that surrounds it.

I think I'm going to pony up in the next month or so and get a Macbook Pro. Can't ... resist ... the force ...

BTW, are you guys going to Rails Conf? It would be great to get together with all the .NET to Rails converts. Just shoot me an email if you want to connect. Maybe we can put together an informal dinner one night...

Brian, thanks for the VibrantInk settings. I'll give them a try.

I'm actually thinking of buying the new MacMini and using it for Rails development.

Ryan, you're not alone in being disappointed with .NET. In fact, I'm prototyping my day job's project site in RoR. I've never liked developing web apps in VS.NET (I prefer to hand code in Dreamweaver and write the backend libraries in VS). In just one week I have an authentication system, page creation system with Redcloth, taggable bookmarks system including geographic features, and an AJAX dashboard system that uses widgets to pull scientific data from web services/RSS feeds (ala Netvibes). I'm continually amazed at this framework. I just wish 1.1 would be released soon.

I wish I was going to RubyConf. I'd like to meet other .NET devs who are using RoR. Have fun! Do any of you attend the Chicago Ruby users meetings (Chirb)?

    -Chris

@Chris: I do. Going on Monday?

Unfortunetly no RailsConf for me. I was thinking about trying to go but it's not going to be doable. Maybe next year :)

By the way if any of you guys want to try and get cool without spending the cash you could give the Free Mac Mini thing a shot:

I've heard from a number of people [1] that its actually legit. I just haven't gotten enough people to believe me to find out :)

Brian, no, I won't be at the Chirb meeting on Monday. Hopefully one of these days I'll be there. I'll try to make the April meeting.

    Damn, this is stupid.

Rails is great and I think VS sucks, but at the same time I'm sick of all this drooling over Macs and Textmate. They're cool. It's nice. But come on- it's a fucking text editor.

People need to get over this stuff, there's so many sheep in the Rails community when it comes to this stuff it makes me sick.

Ha! Great post. I work on a PC all day and a Mac at night and I'm constantly doing the same little things to make my time on a PC a little more pleasant.

I don't know what it is about Textmate, but it really is almost an emotional connection you make with it... and all that over a silly text editor :)

Is the exported settings file still available? The link is broken.
