My $3000 text editor 10

I broke down and did it. I bought a Mac.

A 17” Macbook Pro. I could cry.

Actually, not my first Mac. And not my first Apple computer, by a long stretch. I grew up on a few Apple IIs and used Macs throughout college (which was… yikes… 10 years ago). I had one of those lime-green iMacs when they first came out 6 or so years ago. But this one is damn sweet. OS X just rocks.

After taking about 50 dumb Photo Booth pictures, I got right down to business and installed my Rails development environment. Big props to Dan Benjamin for his guide.

And, of course, picked up TextMate. So based on what I’ve used it for so far, my Mac is the most expensive 1-megapixel camera + text editor in the world.

The thing is smokin’ fast, in general. A quick comparison: the functional test suite for a small project I’ve been working on took about 4 seconds to run on my XP laptop (2.0Ghz Centrino, 1.5 GB RAM). On the MBP, a mind-boggling 0.11 seconds.

I still use Windows XP at my day job, where I develop .NET apps. (Yes, it’s sad.) So, indeed, I still qualify as a Softie ;)

Congrats! Welcome back to the cult.

Don't feel bad. I have been doing .Net during the day and Rails on my Mac at night for nearly a year now. It starts small. A powerbook here, a mini there. Next thing you know your wife is telling you that you can't get any more macs until you sell one of the other 5. Hmpf.

Welcome aboard. Just wait until the urge to stop doing .Net hits you.

Arghh, this isn't helping me resist doing the same. I've got my MacBook all priced up and ready to go at the Apple Store. Persuading the partner that I really, really need to replace my (perfectly servicable) Dell laptop is taking some doing though.

I wonder if I cover up the Apple logo on the lid she won't notice?

@BrianK: The urge to stop doing .NET hit me months ago :)

Welcome to the dark side :) I picked up my MacbookPro a while back. Rails dev work at night, and .net dev work on it using paralells during the day.

Only 0.11 seconds? You need to write more tests! ;)

LOL! Yes, it is a small project :)

    Trader.

Just kidding man. I have one too. It's just a mini though. ;)

    I love Mac OS X!

    Oops.

    Meant to say traitor. LOL!

    My bad.

I am jealous! I am just getting into RoR, and I want a Mac so very badly. Unfortunately it will be a few months before I have enough saved up to get a MacBook... Oh well, anything worth having...
