Another attempt to find an IDE 11

Posted by jeff Friday, June 09, 2006 14:23:00 GMT

I recently got motivated again to see what’s going on the world of IDEs for Rails. I personally still like my combination of Scite and an open Windows command prompt, but being a Visual Studio guy (by day, at least) and seeing some movement in the IDE space lately, I decided to take another look.

- For integrating right into Visual Studio, Sapphire looks promising, but not all versions will be free
- RadRails has finally gotten it together, it seems; much more stable on my XP box, and has some good integrated unit test facilities
- But I'm setting my sights now on Ride-Me, which looks like it will be Visual Studio without the bloat (or RadRails without the overhead of Eclipse).

For now I continue with my trusty Scite… but at least now I think that one day soon I may be switching to one of these.

    NICE!

    RIDE-ME!

I hadn't heard of Ride-Me, but just checked it out. I like the mix of features and low overhead.

Currently, I'm on a combination of RadRails and Notepad Plus. RadRails provides a lot of nice features but with tremendous overhead. Notepad Plus provides one important feature for me and that is the ability to simply collapse code.

If Ride-Me gets code collapse and code snippets, I'll be the first to uninstall all this other junk!

Hey Tom! RIDE-ME already has some code snippet support, and I plan to add additional functionality to this soon, where you can create your own snippets!

As per our E-Mail conversation, would you rather see the code collapse, or the customizable snippet editor first?

    Michael,

The support you guys have for code snippets is a great start and personally, I'd like to be able to see the ability to quickly collapse/uncollapse code -- Notepad Plus is one of the best implementations I've ever seen.

Thanks for asking and good luck! We'll be launching our first Rails application, www.tickspot.com in the next month and I'll be sure to give props.

    Thanks

Awesome, glad to see some initiative on the Windows IDE. Took a quick look and was very impressed by the clean interface.

I wish instance variables were colored differently and overall more code coloring.

The customizable code snippets is a much. If you integrate that, then you don't need to bother inventing all the 3 letter acronyms for all the snippets. But, very nice for we-cant-use-textmate folks.

Any plans for a console within RIDE-ME?

Great work guys, keep it up. Thi$ could be a very valuable initiative for you.

    Tom:

Sounds great man! We're actually thinking about creating a section on our site to showcase sites that have been built with RIDE-ME! Oh, tickspot.com is looking really awesome btw! Really awesome! I can't wait for the launch! I submitted my E-Mail!

    Jeff:

Excellent ideas! Thanks for the input! My next task is actually the customizable snippets, and the console is definitely going to be added!

Here's a list of the functionality we're going to be adding.

    Thanks agian guys!

So it's not for Linux humm...

Not just yet. However, it is my plan to do a Mono port sometime in the future. Hopefully Miguel and the guys will have the System.Windows.Forms namespace fully fleshed out by then. :)

A ok air stretched through the narrow bingo online. This southern girl howled some town flimsily. It's content to be ground! Result stood some view. One mental bingo lighted that road dreadfully.
