Rails 101 for Microsoft Developers 9

Posted by jeff Wednesday, September 13, 2006 18:41:20 GMT

A while ago we asked if there would be any interest in a Ruby on Rails class geared especially for current and former Microsoft developers (C#, VB.NET, VB6, ASP, MFC, whatever).

We’re excited to say that we’re going to try to set something up for this coming January. We’re working on finding a good location in Chicago. We’re planning a full day on Saturday (including Sat. evening) and a half-day on Sunday.

It will be very interactive and hands-on. This is going to be a casual and fun time for all us softies on Rails to get to meet and learn from each other. Bring a Windows laptop or pair up with someone who has one. There will be no Powerpoint spectating here. :-)

This will be “Rails 101 for Windows”. We’re going to start with the basics of how to get your Windows environment setup (Ruby, Rails, MySQL, Subversion, etc.) properly on Saturday morning, and by Sunday we’ll have built a Rails app together with perhaps a touch of Ajax. The emphasis will be on how you, the C#/VB/ASP.NET developer, can successfully switch to Ruby and to the Rails framework. Well be comparing C# with Ruby, and contrasting the ASP.NET page model to the Rails MVC model.

Be on the lookout for another announcment from us in the coming weeks, detailing time, location, and cost, as well as an outline of the topics we intend to cover.

And a new headcount would be really helpful as we try to find a suitable location… so if you think you might come, drop us a comment as well. Got a suggestion for what you want us to be sure we cover? We want to know that, too.

Hey do you guys mind if I come and crash the party?

I can be like a TA. I'll even bring an apple, or fetch coffee and donuts. Whatever. LOL!

    No... seriously.

I'll probably be there. Thanks for putting this together. Is this intended for total newbs, or will there be some intermediate stuff too (I've been using RoR for over 1 year)? I like the idea of doing a comparison of MVC to the ASP.NET model. I should drag my co-workers to this.

I'd like to finally learn Subversion, get some deployment tips on Windows Server (yes, I know...ack) and hear some local success stories of integrating Rails into their M$ jobs.

People who develop .NET apps probably don't have the luxury of moving cold turkey to Rails/*nix, so maybe some ways to integrate Rails w/ legacy .Net apps.

Another idea....experiences w/ SQL 2005 and Rails. I've used Rails w/ SQL 2000 quite a bit, but I'm curious to hear how 2005 is working out.

Hey Jeff! I'd definitely be interested in attending and/or presenting. Let me know when you get closer to putting it together!

I am a C# developer who would love to attend. I am just getting into Ruby and Rails. So far I really like what I see. As for topics, I would like to see a comparison of ROR and ASP.NET production deployment. Count me in.

Sounds good. Look forward to seeing more information on the event closer to the date. Definitely interested in attending!
